According to the game's mechanics, evidence and ghost identification must be marked in the Journal to receive money and XP. On Nightmare difficulty and higher, the ghost will only show two or fewer pieces of evidence, so players must use the ghost's special traits and abilities to determine the correct ghost type. Some ghosts also have forced evidence, which will always show up as long as there is at least one evidence given. The presence of Ghost Orbs can be recorded as video evidence using a video camera, and along with other recordable items like ghost writing, items being thrown, and doors moving, these recordings contribute to the media system introduced in the Chronicle update in June 2025. To achieve a perfect game, players must have five unique videos, meaning each video must capture a different type of interaction or evidence.

The team had been investigating the abandoned Brownstone High School for nearly twenty minutes, their sanity dropping steadily as the ghost refused to give clear signs. The thermometer showed freezing temperatures in the gymnasium, and the EMF reader had spiked near the lockers, but without a third piece of evidence, they couldn't confirm the ghost type. Then the investigator watching the van's Surveillance Computer called out over the walkie-talkie: 'I've got Ghost Orbs on the camera in the gym.' The team rushed back, training their video camera on the same spot, and there they were — faint, glowing spheres drifting near the basketball hoop. The evidence was confirmed, narrowing the ghost to a handful of possibilities. They marked it in the Journal and completed the contract, earning the cash and XP needed to upgrade their equipment.
