Evidence Collection System

Gather clues, cross-reference data, and identify the spirit before it claims your sanity.

The Evidence Collection System is the core investigative mechanic of Phasmophobia, defining how players identify and classify paranormal entities within haunted locations. Rather than relying on combat or direct confrontation, this system challenges teams to gather specific physical and metaphysical clues using specialized equipment. By cross-referencing these findings against a database, investigators can narrow down the ghost's identity from a pool of over thirty distinct types.

3 per Ghost (varies by difficulty)
Key Tools Involved
EMF Reader, Spirit Box, UV Light, Thermometer, Video Camera, D.O.T.S. Projector
Failure Condition
Sanity Depletion or Team Elimination before identification
Victory Condition
Correctly identifying the ghost type and escaping

Higher difficulties require more evidence and reduce visibility

Lore & Background

In the world of Phasmophobia, ghosts are not merely spirits but complex entities with unique behavioral patterns and physical manifestations that defy standard scientific explanation. The Evidence Collection System was developed by paranormal researchers to categorize these anomalies, recognizing that no two ghosts manifest in exactly the same way. Each entity leaves behind a specific 'fingerprint'—a combination of three distinct phenomena from a set of six possible indicators—that distinguishes it from all others.

In Their Own Story

The rain hammered against the window of the old Blackwood High school classroom as the team huddled in the hallway. 'Thermometer dropped to two degrees,' whispered the lead investigator, their breath visible in the freezing air. A sudden static crackle erupted from the Spirit Box, followed by a chilling whisper that seemed to come from nowhere and everywhere at once. They checked the video monitor; the D.O.T.S. projector cast long, translucent shapes across the floor where no one stood. 'EMF level five,' someone gasped, pointing to the spiking needle on the reader. With three pieces of evidence locked in their minds, they knew exactly what was hunting them, but the clock was ticking down as the lights began to flicker violently.

Reader's Guide

An investigation begins by entering a haunted location and distributing tools among the team. Players must first locate the ghost room, often indicated by sudden temperature drops or EMF spikes. Once inside, specific tools are used to gather evidence: The Spirit Box answers questions to confirm presence; the Thermometer detects cold spots; UV Light reveals fingerprints on surfaces; Video Cameras with night vision capture orbs; D.O.T.S. Projectors show moving lights; and EMF Readers detect energy levels up to 5. Sanity drains faster when in dark areas, near the ghost room, or during hauntings. If sanity hits zero, a hunt begins where the ghost becomes visible and lethal. Players must avoid death while collecting at least three distinct evidence types. Victory is achieved by correctly identifying the ghost type using the collected clues on the bus terminal map before escaping. Failure occurs if all players die or if they identify the wrong ghost type.
