Sanity Meter
Keep your mind strong, or the darkness will consume you.
The Sanity Meter is a gameplay mechanic in Eternal Darkness: Sanity's Requiem. Upon beginning the game's second chapter, players must keep watch on a Sanity meter – a green bar which decreases when the player is spotted by an enemy. As the bar becomes low, subtle changes to the environment and random unusual events begin to occur, which reflect the character's slackening grip on reality.

Lore & Background
Minor effects include a variety of things, such as a skewed camera angle, heads of statues following the character, and unsettling noises. Stronger effects include bleeding on walls and ceilings, entering a room that is unrealistic before finding that the character never left the previous room, or the character suddenly dying. Fourth wall breaking effects such as "To Be Continued" promotions for a "sequel", and simulated errors and anomalies of the TV or GameCube can happen either from low or depleted sanity, or by a scripted event. While the latter does not affect gameplay, they can be misconstrued by the player as being actual technical malfunctions.
In Their Own Story
The rain hammered against the windowpane of the abandoned school, but the chill in my bones had nothing to do with the weather. My sanity meter blinked red at 42%, a silent scream warning me that the entity was close. I clutched my EMF reader tight, knuckles white, as the air grew heavy and thick. Every shadow seemed to stretch toward me, whispering things I couldn't quite hear but felt deep in my marrow. I knew if I dropped below 30%, there would be no turning back; the door to the hallway would slam shut, and the hunt would begin.
Reader's Guide
Before entering a location, ensure every team member has at least one Sanity Candle to help recover mental stability during moments of high tension. Upon arrival, split up cautiously to gather evidence like fingerprints or spirit box responses, but keep communication lines open to monitor each other's sanity levels.
As you collect clues, watch the meter closely; if it drops rapidly due to ghost events or proximity, retreat immediately to a safe zone or light your candle. Do not linger in dark rooms alone for too long, as darkness accelerates sanity loss significantly more than daylight does.
When a hunt is triggered by low sanity, prioritize escaping over evidence gathering. Run to the nearest vehicle or outside area where the ghost cannot follow you. If trapped, hide under furniture and hold your breath until the entity passes, using your remaining sanity to survive long enough for the next opportunity to flee.
